NATIONWIDE TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED DELIVERIES

Challenge

Multi-national food company Danone is singing the praises of its reliable refrigerated temperature controlled transportation network that helps increase supply chain efficiency and prevent costly logistics overheads.

Danone is a global food company made up of four divisions: dairy, waters, early life nutrition (ELN) and medical which aims to bring health to the wider society, with products sold and distributed in more than 130 countries across five continents. The successful partnership between Danone and Courier Express Refrigerated Transport Ltd has evolved over the past four years, meaning the refrigerated transport solutions provider has become an integral part of the Danone business.

The food and drink sector has become an increasingly competitive and challenging industry for food manufacturers, such as Danone, to operate in. With customers based nationwide, a shift towards more e-commerce sales and rising distribution costs, food manufacturers are seeking new and innovative ways to maintain an effective supply chain, whilst also preserving healthy profit margins. Hungry for efficiency and cost savings, Danone realised the value of a reliable supply chain to ensure products could be delivered daily to a wide range of customers across the UK, as well as internationally.

With a wide variety of fresh produce, including fresh dairy products, formula milks such as Aptamil, bottled water and medical nutrition, distributed to customers nationwide, seven days a week, Danone had a requirement for a flexible supply chain that could easily adapt to the specific temperature-requirements of the products being transported. What’s more, reliability was also high on the agenda for Danone, as failure to meet sample delivery windows would result in loss of tenders, and ultimately a loss in substantial revenue.

The company operates a round-the-clock distribution model. Food produce is held in warehouses where orders are taken until 6pm each day, in order for them to delivered to customers before 9am the following day. Due to this, Danone had a necessity for overnight sample delivery to ensure end-customers’ orders could be met at all times, no matter the size of the order, delivery location or specific temperature controlled requirements of the products being conveyed. A same day delivery service was also needed to make shipments of products to customers.

Whilst meeting the exacting delivery slots of customers was vital to business operations, equally essential was reducing overheads from refrigerated transport services. Danone, therefore, knew a cost-effective pricing structure was pivotal to ensure the corporation remained profitable.

In a bid to resolve this, the food manufacturer worked with Courier Express Ltd to reshape its logistics operations, building a network of strategically located sites to provide same day foodservice and overnight sample deliveries.
